The number of Yemenis who have died as a result of their inability to travel abroad for health care since the closure of the Sana’a airport by the Saudi-led coalition in Sana’a a year ago exceeds the number of people killed by airstrikes, an aid group said on Wednesday.

The Norwegian Refugee Council quoted data from the Health Ministry in Sana’a, which is controlled by the Huthis, that about ten thousand Yemenis have died because of health conditions they were seeking treatment abroad.

This number exceeds the toll of violent attacks in Yemen, estimated at 9,000.

The restrictions imposed by the Arab alliance on Yemeni airspace led to the official closure of Sana’a airport for commercial flights on August 9 last year.

The Norwegian Council said in a statement that the closure did not leave any safe means of transport for Yemenis to travel to or from the country.

“The travel ban has caused the deaths of thousands of Yemenis who suffering from non-fatal diseases, surpassing the death toll from air strikes and cholera,” said Mu’tasem Hamdan, director of the Yemen branch of the council. “The war on Yemen is destroying the lives of Yemenis on all fronts,” he said.
