The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Saturday that 150,000 Yemeni children have been infected with cholera since the outbreak of the epidemic on April 27 this year.

The number of suspected cases of cholera, to date, reached 636,000, of whom 150,000 were children under five years of age, the International Organization said in a tweet via its Twitter account.

It added that two thousand and 62 people were killed by the epidemic in the period mentioned.

According to UNICEF, some 40,000 local volunteers have treated some 250,000 children and elderly in all Yemeni provinces and have been cured of diarrhea.

Cholera causes severe diarrhea that can kill the patient within hours if he or she does not receive treatment.

Children under 5 years of age continue to suffer from malnutrition, which is most likely to be caused by food and drinking water contamination.

According to World Health Organization data, most people with the disease have been cured after receiving treatment at specialist centers.
